Tevake
is a 45ft trimaran, constructed from a design by Roger Simpson called
Leahona. It was built in 1982 in Brisbane, Australia, by Peter Maclaren.
Construction is foam glass, with plywood bulkheads, and veneer interior
furniture. It was extensively refitted in New Zealand in 1993-4.
Tevake is an open-wing design with all accommodations in the main
hull, storage in the floats. and a firm web tramp in between. The
main hull has a mini-keel with a pivoting centerboard. The draft with
centerboard up is under three-and-a- half feet and 7 feet with the
board down. Rudder and skeg are a little less deep than the mini-keel.
Tevake is an excellent sailing boat, good in light airs as
well as strong winds. She sails with a very balanced helm and easily
makes 175 to 190 miles per day while cruising. The roller furling
head sails make it very easy for one person to adjust to changing
conditions while alone on watch.
Equipment list: electric windless. wind vane self-steering, electric
autopilot, three burner propane stove with oven, 12 volt refrigerator,
four large solar panels (which have been sufficient to run all electrical
needs of the boat, including refrigeration, while cruising), LeVac
head, VHF radio, Garmen GPS, Whale foot pumps for sinks.
Dinghies-10' sailing/rowing Gig Harbor light weight
12' Livingston catamaran motor skiff with 15hp Evenrude
Interior
lay out is a vee bunk queen-sized bed and head forward of the main
beam. The main cabin has two single wing bunks outboard of a settee
opposite a bench seat. Aft of the dining area is the navigation station
on starboard and galley to port. The galley has a three-burner propane
stove and oven, sink and storage, with a beautiful seagreen tile counter.
There are three steps up to the semi-enclosed cockpit, which is built
over the engine room. Aft is a double cabin. The layout is exceptionally
family friendly.
The boat has a cutter rig with Profurl roller furling jib and staysail.
A new tapered aluminum 50' mast and boom were stepped in 1994. A new
Hood mainsail and jib were installed in 2004. All standing rigging
have just been replaced in the last dry dock completed at the beginning
of June 2009. All winches are self-tailing Lewmars. The mainsail is
full battened and slides on Harken cars. The engine is a Yanmar 18hp
diesel installed in 1999. It has low hours and runs well. It has a
three blade feathering prop.
One
of the special features of Tevake is the semi-enclosed cockpit, which
creates sheltered space while sailing and at anchor. The roof houses
the solar panels, a boom gallows, and rain catchment system with downspouts.
This semi-enclosed aspect of the cockpit is one of my wife's favorite
features. We can be in shorts while others are in foul-weather gear,
in shade while others are burning on long day-sails. When waves crash
on deck, we stay dry, while still enjoying excellent visibility. The
custom-made curving windshield is such a radical improvement over
the numerous flat panels normally found in enclosed cockpits. You
really have to experience this aspect of the boat to fully appreciate
how superior it is to the vast majority of cockpits, enclosed or otherwise.
My wife and I cruised on Tevake for a couple of years in the South
Pacific (New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, the Cook Islands, and French Polynesia)
before sailing her back to Hawaii.(The previous owners spent years
cruising all over the Pacific, North and South, with their children.)
After having our first child, we returned for a few months to cruise
in French Polynesia with our 1-year-old. We installed a custom-made
net cover for one of the side bunks to prevent middle of the night
wanderings. Lately, we have found ourselves sailing less as life on
land takes over. We'd like to make Tevake available to someone who
will be able to take her cruising again. So many boats are designed
as either day-sailiers, racers, or one-week cruisers. Tevake was designed
and used as a ocean-crossing long-term cruiser. We'd like to see her
cruise again.
Tevake is fresh out of dry dock. Her many special features must be
seen in person to be fully appreciated. $149,000.00 US
